Report on the Karam Festival Celebration at St. Francis Xavier Chapel, Colaba

The Karam Festival, a vibrant and meaningful celebration of the tribal community, was held with devotion and cultural spirit on Sunday, 26th October at St. Francis Xavier Chapel, Colaba. Dedicated to the Karam tree, symbolizing strength, fertility, and unity, the festival expressed gratitude to God and nature for the blessings of life and harvest. Around 400 tribal migrants participated, dressed in colourful traditional attire that filled the chapel with joy and energy. The Holy Eucharist, the central part of the celebration, began at 3:00 p.m. and was presided over by Fr. Glasten( In charge AMC), assisted by Dn. Bidwan Shobhasundar, in the presence of Most Rev. Bishop Lourdes Daniel (Bishop Emeritus of Nashik Diocese), Fr. Peter Jayakanthan SSS, Fr. Jesu Augustine SSS, and Fr. Infant Raj SSS.

The liturgy beautifully blended faith with tribal tradition. The rhythmic drum beats, dances, and songs created an atmosphere of reverence and joy. The symbolic Karam branch, representing life and fertility, was carried in procession and placed near the altar as a sign of offering creation to God. The faithful participated with enthusiasm, expressing their thanksgiving through music and dance. The chapel, decorated with leaves, branches, and flowers, reflected the community’s closeness to nature. In his message, Bishop Lourdes Daniel encouraged the faithful to remain strong in faith and united as a community, while cherishing their cultural roots. His words inspired all to live their faith joyfully and gratefully.

After the Eucharist, a vibrant procession led the Bishop and priests to the hall with lively drumming and singing. A felicitation ceremony followed, where the community expressed gratitude to the Bishop and priests for their presence and encouragement. The celebration continued with traditional Karam dances and folk songs showcasing the beauty of tribal culture and the spirit of unity. The event concluded in an atmosphere of joy and thanksgiving, standing as a powerful witness of faith and culture coming together in harmony.
