The Cenacle Velappanchavady, Chennai
This Community is known as Cenacle. Once we moved our life from Karunaivanam Annanagar to “Cenacle” and it has become a Community of Welcome and hospitality and is the main house in Chennai for our SSS. Cenacle had different phases of Formations, specifically English year, Collegians, Postulancy, Scholasticsmajor seminarians, and it has added to the list of senior college students. We accommodate everyone who comes here. We also have housed our religious who had come here for their needs like medical treatments, obtaining government documents and been serving as transit house.
History
The Karunaivanam house at Annanagar was not enough as students increased in numbers, so the search for the bigger place was on the move and finally the land was bought at Velappanchavadi and foundation stone was laid on 12.07. 1991.With the great contribution of our religious in Australia this beautiful house was built under the supervision hard work of late Rev.Fr.K.Y.Anthony.sss. On 23rd April 1992 this house was dedicated for the purpose of the scholastics and students by Very. Rev. Fr. Anthony Mc Sweeney.sss the Superior General and Blessed by Most.Rev. Casimir Gnanadickam.Sj. Archbishop of Madras- Mylapore.
Purpose
This house caters to the need of both formation and mission, but it has been primarily for the formation. After a period of gap, once again the Scholastics have commenced their studies at Sacred Heart Seminary – Poonamally and entirely new system of distance studies on philosophy [senior college -IGNOU] at OMI College – Perambakkam. From June 2014 onwards once again Graduation at Loyola College run by the Jesuits in Chennai is started. At present this house is meant for only the formation of the collegians and Postulants.
Mission Under the care of this community Karunalayam the Centre for Eucharistic Evangelization started at present it is independent centre for the mission.
Special Ministry
During the holidays, retreats, and recollection for the religious as group and individuals took place in the house, especially thrice a year Catechumens from different parts of Chennai spent the time of prayer and worship. Social project Apart from the daily involvement in 3 tuition centres our students also take part in the POOVAI SOCIAL WORK organized by the seminary with help of Religious, who live in and around poonamallee.
